Montenegro ceased to function as an independent state in January 1916 when Austro-Hungarian forces completed their occupation, but limited administrative activity continued into 1915 under increasingly desperate conditions. This trial piece in nickel was almost certainly produced as part of a coinage planning exercise that never reached fruition — Montenegro had no domestic mint and relied on foreign facilities, making any 1915 striking a matter of political optimism as much as monetary planning.
