| Obverse description | Central field dominated by the elaborate Ottoman tughra of Sultan Abdulmecid I, rendered in raised relief with characteristic calligraphic flourishes and interlocking loops. A floral spray or branch motif appears to the right of the tughra. The regnal year in Arabic numerals is inscribed below the tughra. The coin is bordered by a continuous beaded inner circle running along the rim. |

Egypt under Abbas I struck this issue in the name of the Ottoman sultan Abdulmecid I, as required by the suzerainty relationship that technically placed Egypt beneath Constantinople's authority — even as Abbas ruled the province with near-total autonomy. The coins were produced at the Misr (Cairo) mint, which had been modernized by Muhammad Ali in the 1830s using machinery sourced from Europe.
