Additional information

Abdülaziz's Egyptian coinage of this period reflects the khedivate's peculiar dual position: nominally Ottoman territory, practically autonomous under Khedive Ismail, who was busy spending Egypt into bankruptcy on infrastructure projects and the Suez Canal ceremonies. The Istanbul mint supplied some dies; Cairo struck its own. At 0.3 g of .900 silver, this denomination was barely a coin by any practical measure, and most examples that survived did so by accident rather than deliberate preservation.
