Mahendra's reign saw Nepal shift from the democratic experiment of the 1950s to his 1960 royal coup, which dissolved parliament and imprisoned B.P. Koirala. These bronze 10 Paisa pieces were struck entirely under the Panchayat system — the partyless political order Mahendra imposed and controlled directly from the throne until his death in 1972.
