Nepal's aluminium small denominations of this period were minted in two measurably distinct varieties — KM#1014.1 and KM#1014.2 differ in die alignment and edge characteristics, a split that collectors confirmed through systematic die study rather than any official mint announcement. The Royal Mint in London and the Royal Australian Mint both produced Nepalese coinage during Birendra's reign under contract, complicating attribution when mint marks are absent or worn.
The 1990 political upheaval that ended Birendra's absolute monarchy and established constitutional rule had no immediate effect on circulating coinage design — this type continued unchanged through the transition.
