Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani — commonly abbreviated SNSK — operated the coal mining settlement at Longyearbyen under a company-town model so complete that the firm issued its own scrip for internal transactions. Norwegian state currency had no practical circulation on Svalbard at the time; workers were paid partly in this token money, redeemable only at the company store. The arrangement kept wages on the archipelago and discouraged desertion mid-contract.
The SN5r designation flags a documented rarity variant within the series — likely a reprint or paper stock change, though surviving documentation on the exact production differences is thin. SNSK scrip in any form is genuinely uncommon; the isolated Arctic setting meant most notes were worn to destruction or simply discarded when the company settled accounts.
