| Obverse description | Facing bust of Emperor Justin II, helmeted and cuirassed, depicted in a frontal military portrait style characteristic of mid-Byzantine coinage. The emperor wears a plumed helmet adorned with a central jewel or crest, and his draped paludamentum is visible across the shoulders and chest. A partial legend surrounds the effigy in the field, partially obscured by wear and the irregular flan. The style reflects the provincial workshop production of the Syracuse mint, with a somewhat coarser rendering than Constantinople issues. |
