Reverse description A detailed satellite-perspective aerial view of the Dead Sea fills the central field, rendered to capture the distinctive shoreline and mineral-rich waters of this unique geographic landmark. In the lower portion of the field, an ibex stands in profile, representing the native wildlife of the region and symbolizing conservation efforts that saved the species from local extinction. The trilingual legend 'DEAD SEA / ים המלח / البحر الميّت' arcs along the left border in Latin, Hebrew, and Arabic respectively.

Additional information

Israel's annual Independence Day coin series has documented the country's natural and archaeological landmarks since the 1950s, with each year's subject chosen by a state committee. The Dead Sea issue appeared as the lake was already measurably shrinking — water levels had been dropping roughly one meter per year for decades, driven by diversion of the Jordan River and industrial extraction by Dead Sea Works.

The 22-karat gold alloy used here is standard for Israeli commemorative issues of this period, struck at the Kremnica Mint in Slovakia under contract.
