Avdat — known in antiquity as Oboda — was a Nabataean city on the main caravan route linking the Arabian Peninsula to the Mediterranean port at Gaza. The city's economy depended entirely on the frankincense and myrrh trade, and its architecture reflects the extraordinary wealth that passed through it. UNESCO inscribed the Negev's Incense Route cities, Avdat among them, as a World Heritage Site in 2005, which directly prompted the Bank of Israel's decision to issue this commemorative series.
The .917 gold specification places it in the 22-karat category Israel has consistently used for its higher-denomination commemorative issues.
