The Isle of Man gained control of its own postal and coinage systems through the Isle of Man Purchase Act of 1765, when the British Crown bought the island's feudal rights from the Atholl family for £70,000 — a transaction that paradoxically granted the Manx considerable fiscal autonomy while binding them more tightly to London. This series was introduced alongside British decimalization in February 1971, though the Manx government used the moment to issue distinctly local coinage rather than simply mirroring Westminster's output. The Pobjoy Mint struck these pieces, beginning a long exclusive relationship with the island's Treasury.
