| Reverse description | The reverse presents a largely plain, slightly concave inner field surrounding the central square hole, with the square perforation framed by a raised inner rim. Four Chinese characters are disposed at the cardinal points along the broad outer rim: 万 (man, ten-thousand) at top, 用 (yō, use) at left, 通 (tsū, circulation) at right, and 代 (dai, generation/era) at bottom, together reading 万代用通 (circulated for ten-thousand generations). The characters are cast in low relief and the surfaces show the characteristic matte texture of sand-cast Edo-period coinage. |
