The Banco de Portugal's Funchal branch operated as a regional issuer for Madeira, legally distinct in its note-issuing authority from the Lisbon parent. This 10 Mil Réis from 1878 belongs to one of the earliest series put out under that arrangement — a period when the archipelago's commercial economy was still heavily dependent on wine exports and the branch's notes functioned in a genuinely isolated monetary environment.

Pick 2 is scarce. Funchal-branch notes of this vintage rarely survived in any number; the island's humidity has not been kind to cotton-paper issues of the period.
