Finland joined the European Union on January 1, 1995, alongside Austria and Sweden — the largest single enlargement since the UK, Ireland, and Denmark entered in 1973. The accession followed a national referendum in October 1994 in which 57% voted in favour, a narrower margin than many officials had anticipated. This commemorative was among the last Finnish issues denominated in markka before the country adopted the euro in 2002, making it an inadvertent bookend to an entire monetary era that had survived the Winter War, postwar Soviet reparations, and two devaluations.
