Additional information

The Neues Gewandhaus opened in Leipzig on 8 October 1981, the first purpose-built concert hall constructed in the GDR and the product of nearly a decade of political negotiation — the SED leadership had repeatedly deprioritized the project in favor of industrial investment. This coin, issued the following year, was part of the DDR's deliberate commemorative program that used cultural monuments to project an image of socialist cultural achievement abroad, with many examples exported for hard currency rather than circulating domestically.
