Comments

Augsburg's municipal administration issued its own paper money during the final year of the First World War as the German imperial currency system buckled under wartime strain. This note belongs to the broader Notgeld phenomenon — emergency scrip issued by municipalities, businesses, and institutions filling a vacuum left by the disappearance of metal coinage from circulation. Cities printing their own money through local firms was entirely unremarkable by late 1918; what varied was execution.

J. P. Himmer, an Augsburg printing house established in 1842, handled this series locally. The embossed seal was the primary anti-counterfeiting measure — modest by any standard, but adequate for short-term municipal scrip never intended to circulate far beyond the issuing city.
