Bingen issued this note in 1918 under the municipal emergency currency provisions that proliferated across Germany as the imperial government's ability to supply small-denomination Reichsmark coinage collapsed under wartime metal demands. J. Maubach & Co. in Frankfurt handled a considerable volume of Notgeld printing for municipalities across the Rhine-Main region during this period, which makes their output technically competent but rarely distinguished — the watermarked paper being the main concession to anti-counterfeiting practice.
Bingen am Rhein sat on a strategically significant Rhine crossing, and by late 1918 the local economy was running largely on municipal scrip of this kind.
