Mühlhausen issued this Kriegsgeld note under emergency authorization in 1918, as the imperial banking system strained under wartime coin hoarding and metal requisitioning. Municipal authorities across Germany were printing their own temporary currency by this point — Mühlhausen was one of hundreds of towns doing so, but the relatively high face value of 10 Mark places this among the more substantial denominations in local emergency issue, where most towns kept to fractions of a Mark or single-digit values.
Freuchmann's signature as magistrate representative is the only authenticating element. No counterfoil, no serial redemption mechanism — just civic trust and the implicit promise of postwar settlement, which the inflation of 1919–1923 rendered academic.
