Obverse description Printed on a tan-beige ground with a fine guilloche underprint, the note carries a bold Fraktur legend 'Notgeld der Stadt Ahlen (Westfalen)' along the top margin, beneath which the denomination 'Zehn Mark' is rendered in large Gothic blackletter type. A watermark-style vignette of the city arms occupies the centre background, while the circular official seal of the Stadt Ahlen i. Westf. with a tower device appears at lower left, and a numerator '10' guilloche medallion at lower right. The issue date 'Ahlen (Westf.), den 10. Oktober 1918', the authority inscription 'Der Magistrat', a manuscript signature, and a redemption clause are set in the lower portion of the face.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in tan-brown and blue tones over a fine guilloche underprint, with the denomination 'Zehn Mark' in large Gothic blackletter flanking a central vignette of the full Ahlen municipal coat of arms — a heraldic shield surmounted by a battlemented tower and charged with a stylised eel and bird motif. Numeral '10' counters appear in each lower corner, and a blue oval stamp is visible at lower right. A framed patriotic quotation attributed to Friedrich der Große, 1757, is set in a rectangular panel at the foot of the design.
Reverse lettering Zehn Mark
Es wird das Jahr stark u. schwach hergehn –
Aber man muß die Ohren steif halten u. Jeder,
der Ehre und Liebe für das Vaterland hat, muß
alles daran setzen. Friedrich der Große – 1757 –
