Halberstadt issued this 10 Mark Notgeld in 1918 under the authority of its municipal government, part of the massive wave of emergency municipal currency that flooded Germany as the imperial financial system buckled under wartime strain. The Reichsbank had effectively lost control of small-denomination liquidity by mid-1918, forcing towns of every size to become de facto issuers.
Faber of Magdeburg was a workhorse regional printer for this kind of emergency paper — competent, fast, and close enough to serve dozens of municipalities across Saxony and Prussian Saxony during the same period.
