| Additional information |
Issued to mark the centenary of the death of Moshoeshoe I, the Basotho king who founded the nation now called Lesotho and famously secured its protection under the British Crown in 1868 — a move that kept it from absorption into Boer or British South African territory and ultimately preserved its existence as a separate sovereign state into the modern era. He died in March 1870.
The .925 silver commemorative program from this period was produced at the British Royal Mint on contract, a common arrangement for smaller Commonwealth-affiliated nations lacking their own minting infrastructure.
