Additional information

Lesotho issued this piece as part of the wave of Olympic commemoratives that flooded collector markets ahead of the Los Angeles Games — a phenomenon so saturated that the numismatic trade spent years afterward absorbing unsold inventory. Dozens of nations with no athletes competing in LA produced identical programs, typically through contract mints, to generate foreign currency revenue rather than any genuine sporting connection.

Lesotho did send athletes to Los Angeles, which at minimum distinguishes this issue from the most cynical of that batch.
