| Reverse description | The reverse presents a dignified bust of His Majesty King Letsie III in three-quarter left-facing profile, depicted in civilian attire with jacket and tie, rendered in high relief against a polished field. The legend 'H.M. KING LETSIE III · CORONATION' curves along the upper periphery, while the commemorative date '31ST OCTOBER 1997' is inscribed in a straight line along the lower portion of the field. Two small decorative dots flank the portrait at mid-field. |

| Additional information |
Letsie III's path to the throne was anything but straightforward. He was first installed as king in 1990 after his father, Moshoeshoe II, was deposed by the military government of Major General Justin Lekhanya — then abdicated in 1995 to allow Moshoeshoe II to return, only to be reinstated after his father died in a disputed horse-riding accident at the Royal Stables in January 1996. The coronation commemorated by this coin, held in October 1997, was therefore less a routine succession than the resolution of nearly a decade of political turbulence.
