The Banque Nationale du Congo replaced the Banque Centrale du Congo Belge et du Ruanda-Urundi as the issuing authority following independence, but the transition was neither clean nor swift — Belgian technical and printing relationships persisted well into the late 1960s. Thomas De La Rue's continued involvement reflects how thoroughly the new state inherited the infrastructure of its colonial banking apparatus, including supplier contracts.
The makuta denomination structure itself was short-lived. By 1967, the monetary reform that created the zaïre swept away the franc-derived subdivision system entirely, making this series transitional almost from the moment of issue.
