| Obverse description | At center, the Maltese Republic emblem depicted as a traditional Phoenician or ancient galley sailing on stylized waves, with a radiant sun rising behind it, all enclosed within a beaded circle. A small floral sprig appears to the right of the central motif. The circular legend REPUBBLIKA TA MALTA runs around the periphery, separated by a small star ornament at the base. |

Issued as part of Malta's early post-independence commemorative program, this piece was struck when the Central Bank was barely a decade old, having been established only after Malta severed its currency link with sterling in 1967. The Maltese falcon carries obvious cultural weight on the island, but the denomination itself — 10 Liri — placed these firmly outside everyday commerce from the moment of issue.
KM#35 is among the lighter gold issues in the Malta series, a deliberate choice that kept production costs down while the Central Bank was still building its reserves and international credibility.
