Malta's 1974 gold issues were produced in the immediate aftermath of the island's 1974 constitutional amendment that abolished the presidency of the British monarch and declared Malta a republic — the 10 Liri Centaurea being among the first sovereign gold coins struck under that new republican framework. The series was minted by the Franklin Mint under contract, a arrangement common for small nations establishing new coinage programs in the 1970s.
