Campo di Concentramento P.G. 73 was located at Fossoli, near Carpi in Emilia-Romagna, and operated initially as an Italian-run prisoner of war camp before the German occupation of Italy in September 1943 transformed it into a transit camp for Jewish deportees — most bound for Auschwitz. The scrip issued during the earlier POW phase was a closed-currency instrument: prisoners could receive it in place of pay or allowances and spend it only within the camp's canteen system, preventing any accumulation of spendable Italian lire.
The official stamp is the only security feature, which was entirely typical of Italian POW scrip — authentication by impression rather than by printing complexity. Fossoli's postwar notoriety has made any surviving camp material historically significant well beyond its face value.
