Lebanon issued this piedfort ahead of the 1980 Winter Olympics held at Lake Placid — an unusual patronage given Lebanon had no meaningful competitive presence at those games. Piedforts of this issue were struck at roughly double the standard planchet thickness, a French minting tradition revived in the 20th century primarily for collector sets and proof issues.
The Banque du Liban commissioned the piece during the early years of the Lebanese Civil War, which makes the production and distribution logistics of any numismatic program from this period quietly remarkable.
