Croatia's lipa denominations were introduced in 1994 alongside the kuna, the currency that replaced the Yugoslav dinar following independence. The "Latin text" designation distinguishes this type from the earlier Croatian-language obverse variant — both circulated concurrently, a deliberate bilingual acknowledgment that divided Croatian numismatists more than the general public ever noticed.
Brass-plated steel replaced the earlier aluminium bronze composition partway through the series, a cost-driven change common across small-denomination European coinage of the 1990s.
