Bulgaria's weightlifting commemoratives from this period reflect the country's genuine dominance in the sport — Bulgarian lifters won multiple Olympic gold medals through the 1980s and 1990s, though the national federation was devastated by mass doping disqualifications at the 2000 Sydney Games, the very Olympics this coin was issued to mark. Ten Bulgarian athletes were sent home before competition began after testing positive for furosemide.
