Nikolay Gyaurov was among the most celebrated operatic basses of the twentieth century, his career centered at La Scala and the Vienna State Opera across four decades. Bulgaria issued commemorative silver pieces honoring cultural figures with some regularity during the post-communist period, and Gyaurov — who died in 2004 — received this posthumous issue four years after his death. The Bulgarian National Bank's commemorative program in this period leaned heavily on .999 fine silver one-troy-ounce formats aligned with international collector standards.
