Gotse Delchev died in May 1903, just months before the Ilinden–Preobrazhenie Uprising he had spent years organizing — shot by Ottoman troops near Banitsa before he could see it fail. The Bulgarian National Bank has issued commemorative silver in his honor across several decades, making this 2022 piece one in a long line of official numismatic tributes to the IMARO leader claimed simultaneously by both Bulgarian and North Macedonian national memory, a dispute that remains unresolved in diplomatic channels to this day.
