Albania's post-communist monetary reforms of the early 1990s were chaotic enough, but the country was further destabilized by the 1997 collapse of several pyramid schemes that wiped out the savings of roughly two-thirds of the population and triggered a brief civil war. The lekë coinage that followed — including this aluminium bronze type — was part of a long institutional effort by the Bank of Albania to restore basic confidence in physical currency after years of near-total economic breakdown.
