Ștefan Luchian (1868–1916) painted some of his most celebrated works after rheumatoid arthritis had left him unable to hold a brush conventionally — he strapped it to his wrist and continued. The National Bank of Romania has issued a series of fine silver collector pieces honoring Romanian cultural figures, and Luchian's inclusion reflects his standing as the foremost Romanian painter of his generation, largely self-taught in formal oil technique after studies in Bucharest, Munich, and Paris.
The 2018 issue corresponds to the 150th anniversary of his birth.
