Additional information

Ferdinand I's reputation in Romanian historiography rests almost entirely on the decisions of 1916–1918: entering the war on the Entente side despite significant personal reluctance — he was, after all, a Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen prince raised in a German court — and then surviving long enough to see Transylvania, Bukovina, and Bessarabia united under Bucharest. The Romanian Military Museum in Bucharest, whose anniversary this coin marks, holds the material record of that campaign, including the disastrous early retreat through Moldavia when two-thirds of the country fell to the Central Powers.

Ferdinand died in 1927, before the institutions he'd inherited fully stabilized.
