Issued to mark the 150th anniversary of the Romanian Academy's library, one of the largest and most historically significant collections in southeastern Europe, holding manuscripts dating to the medieval period alongside the personal archives of major Romanian cultural figures. The library survived both World War II requisitions and Nicolae Ceaușescu's systematic restructuring of Romanian cultural institutions — a process that displaced or destroyed holdings elsewhere.
The National Bank of Romania has issued commemoratives of this type with some regularity since the early 2000s, most in limited collector editions with minimal circulation pressure.
