| Additional information |
Iuliu Hossu was the Greek-Catholic bishop who read aloud the proclamation of union at the Great National Assembly in Alba Iulia on December 1, 1918 — the act that formally unified Transylvania with Romania. He was later arrested by communist authorities in 1948 following the forced dissolution of the Greek-Catholic Church and spent the remainder of his life under house arrest and detention, dying in 1970 before ever being released. Pope Francis beatified him in 2019, four years after this coin was struck.
