Henri Mathias Berthelot commanded the French Military Mission to Romania from 1916, overseeing the reorganization of a Romanian army that had suffered catastrophic losses against the Central Powers — losing roughly two-thirds of the country's territory, including Bucharest, within months of entering the war. His insistence on rigorous retraining at Iași during the brutal winter of 1916–17 produced results that shocked German commanders at Mărășești the following summer, where Romanian forces held the line against Erich von Falkenhayn's offensive.
Romania granted Berthelot honorary citizenship in 1921, one of very few foreigners ever accorded the distinction.
