| Additional information |
Part of Moldova's wildlife conservation series issued in the early 2000s, this coin was struck at a point when the National Bank of Moldova was actively building an international collector market for its commemorative program — a deliberate hard-currency revenue strategy common among post-Soviet states with limited export economies. Mintages for this series were kept extremely low, typically in the low thousands.
The green woodpecker (*Picus viridis*) is largely absent from Moldova's remaining forest cover, making the conservation framing pointed rather than incidental.
