Issued to mark the first anniversary of Wiesel's death in July 2016, this coin was struck by the National Bank of Romania as part of its long-running commemorative silver program. Wiesel, born in Sighetu Marmației in 1928, was deported to Auschwitz at fifteen; Romania's formal acknowledgment of his life through a legal-tender issue carried particular weight given the country's complicated official reckoning with its wartime role in the Holocaust under the Antonescu regime.
