Additional information

The coin commemorates the 500th anniversary of the first book printed in the Romanian lands — a liturgical text, the Liturghierul, produced in 1508 by the monk Macarie at the Dealu Monastery print shop in Târgoviște, then the capital of Wallachia. Macarie had learned his craft in Venice and brought both equipment and technique back across the Danube, making this among the earliest printed works in the Orthodox Slavonic tradition in southeastern Europe.
