Romania joined NATO on 29 March 2004, alongside six other states in the alliance's largest single expansion — a round of enlargement that more than doubled membership east of the former Iron Curtain. The accession capped over a decade of military restructuring, including the elimination of conscription and the drawdown of Soviet-era equipment that had defined the Romanian armed forces since 1947.
