Georgia's 2000th anniversary issue came at a particularly charged moment — the country had only recently stabilized its currency after the catastrophic collapse of the coupon, introducing the lari in 1995 following years of hyperinflation and civil conflict. Issuing a commemorative of this weight in bimetallic format was a deliberate signal of institutional confidence from the newly established National Bank.
Christianity has been the state religion of Georgia since 337 AD, one of the earliest formal adoptions anywhere in the world, which gives the millennial subject matter more local resonance than a generic calendar milestone.
