The Maldives Monetary Authority was established in 1981, replacing the Maldives Monetary Board and giving the islands their first fully independent central banking structure. This aluminium 10 Laari belongs to the first coinage series issued entirely under that authority's mandate. Aluminium was chosen across the small-denomination laari coins for obvious practical reasons — the rufiyaa's low purchasing power made base metal the only economically rational choice for fractional issues.
