Obverse description The central field features the full coat of arms of Malawi, comprising a shield supported by a lion to the left and a leopard to the right, surmounted by a rising sun and an African fish eagle as crest. The motto scroll at the base bears the legend UNITY AND FREEDOM. The issue date 2003 is divided by the arms, with '20' to the left and '03' to the right. The circular legend REPUBLIC OF MALAWI arcs around the upper periphery, while the denomination 10 KWACHA appears along the lower border.

Malawi's wildlife series issues of the early 2000s were produced primarily for the collector and souvenir market, with limited genuine domestic circulation. The nyala — an antelope native to the dense thickets of southern Africa — has a restricted range that just reaches into Malawi's southern lowlands near the Shire River valley.
