The Eiger's north face — the Nordwand, or "murder wall" as alpinists called it — claimed dozens of lives before Anderl Heckmair's team finally completed the first ascent in July 1938. Malawi's inclusion of the peak in this series reflects a broader trend among small-nation mints in the 2000s of issuing silver commemoratives tied to famous mountains, a category that sold reliably to European collector markets with no particular connection to the issuing country.
