Additional information

Malawi's wildlife coin program of the 2000s targeted the international collector market almost exclusively — these pieces never meaningfully circulated domestically. The California Condor was chosen as part of a broader endangered species series, despite having no geographic or ecological connection to Malawi whatsoever. The condor's population had collapsed to just 27 wild birds by 1987, prompting the controversial captive breeding program that eventually brought numbers back above 500.

Silver-plated copper-nickel rather than solid silver keeps production costs low enough to sustain the high-volume commemorative model these issues depend on.
