Additional information

Michael Iwene Tansi, a Nigerian-born Trappist monk, was beatified by Pope John Paul II in Lagos in March 1998 — the first papal visit to Nigeria and the first beatification ever conducted on African soil. That ceremony alone makes Tansi historically notable, but Malawi's decision to issue a commemorative coin a full decade after the event is harder to explain through any obvious connection, as Tansi had no documented ties to Malawi.

Silver-plated copper-nickel issues of this type were produced almost exclusively for the collector market, with negligible circulation.
