Obverse description The nickel-plated steel centre displays the arms of Malawi, featuring a quartered shield supported by a lion rampant to the left and a leopard rampant to the right, with a rising sun above the crest and a scroll bearing the motto UNITY AND FREEDOM at the base. The nickel brass outer ring carries the country name MALAŴI in large raised letters along the lower arc, with the upper field left open. The overall composition is rendered in bold, high-relief engraving characteristic of modern circulation bimetallic coinage.
