Issued to mark the 370th anniversary of the University of Tartu, founded in 1632 by the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf during the period of Swedish rule over Livonia. The university was closed and reopened several times across subsequent centuries — shuttered under Charles XI, revived by Peter the Great, closed again during the Napoleonic wars — before finally stabilizing as a permanent institution in the 19th century under Russian imperial patronage.
Estonia's commemorative silver program of this period was modest in scope, with individual issues rarely exceeding 20,000 pieces.
