Göteborgs Enskilda Bank was one of the Swedish private commercial banks operating under the enskilda bank system, which granted chartered provincial institutions the right to issue their own notes — a privilege that persisted until the Riksbank finally consolidated note-issuing authority in 1904. By 1879, that system was already under sustained political pressure, and many enskilda banks were beginning to wind down their circulation or consolidate holdings.

Gothenburg's commercial weight gave its enskilda bank more staying power than most provincial issuers, but surviving notes from this period are uncommon — redemption drives were thorough.
